Dossier 1 Update: David Josiah Lawson (w/Jessa)

Our first Dossier episode covered the 2017 homicide of David Josiah Lawson outside a college party in Arcata, California.  David Josiah Lawson was studying Criminology at Humboldt State University when he was killed. Lawson was the president of the Brothers United, a group that formed as a result of the unsolved murder of another black student at the college.

A grand jury convened on the last day of February to decide if charges could be warranted in his death. This week, it’s been reported that grand jury declined to indict the man who police and prosecutors believe is responsible.

To break this all down we’re joined by Jessa Nicholson-Goetz, who is a criminal defense attorney based in Madison, Wisconsin. She’s a founding partner in her law firm and half of the Getting Off podcast, which is highly recommended and religiously listened-to by both Heather and myself. Jessa and her law partner and podcast co-host appeared on the original DJ Lawson Dossier episode.

Chapter 5: Missing in Montana (Tammy Salle)

Episode 3

41-year-old Tammy Salle was reported missing to Anaconda police by her adult daughter on the day after Christmas in 2012. An associated vehicle that Tammy was believed to have been driving at the time - a blueish-gray 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix - was released to the public in connection with Tammy’s disappearance.

Unlike the cases in Episodes 1 and 2, Tammy Salle's case is not a missing person’s case. But it was, for three months in 2012 and 2013, the small town of Anaconda, Montana - population of less than 10,000 - was searching for its second missing woman in four years.

Two days after she was reported missing, the blueish-gray 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix was found abandoned, with one of the tires “shredded” as if it had a blow out, but there was no sign of Tammy with the vehicle, and no indication of how she’d traveled away from the scene, if she had been the person behind the wheel.

Police had at least found the car Tammy was believed to be driving, but not only was she still missing, so was her live-in boyfriend, 38 year-old John Goldberg.  Two days after Tammy was reported missing, Goldberg was invited to the police station for furthering, but he never showed up.  Another two days passed and Goldberg was found deceased in his truck from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.  In the truck, police found a 4-page suicide note and his dog; hungry but alive.

At 2:42 p.m. on March 2, 2013, a fisherman found the decomposed remains of Tammy Salle along a river near Galen, Montana.

Chapter 5: Missing in Montana (Helen Gracia)

Episode 2

On May 23, 2008, Helen Gracia left her home to buy groceries and fill a prescription for her mother. She was reportedly seen later the same day at a local hotel with a male companion in Anaconda, Montana.  After this witness report of Helen Gracia on the night of May 23, 2008, she apparently was never seen again.

The first two episodes of this chapter discuss cases with reasonable suspicion that a homicide has occurred. However, in both cases, the body of the victim has not yet been found.

Police in both jurisdictions have questioned a different possible male suspect in each case: Brandy Christiansen’s ex-boyfriend, and Helen Gracia’s unidentified male companion a witness saw with her at a bar.

In January of 2006, Tad DiBiase prosecuted the second "no body" murder case tried in Washington, D.C. and he’s researched and pursued his interest in homicide cases where the victim’s body is missing ever since.  His website - NoBodyCases.com lists over 500 "no body" murder trials in the United States. Tad also consults pro-bono with law enforcement agencies throughout the United States and Canada.

Helen Gracia was last seen in the greater Butte, Montana area in May 2008. She is a Hispanic female, 5-foot-5 and 200 pounds. Anyone with information about her disappearance should contact the Anaconda, Montana police department at: (406) 563-5241.

Chapter 5: Missing in Montana (Brandy Christiansen)

Episode 1

46-year-old Brandy Christiansen was last seen on November 2nd, 2007, before she seemingly vanished from Butte-Silver Bow County, Montana.  Police found her abandoned car 12 days later.  Brandy’s 1991 Toyota Tercel was found abandoned on the road between Homestake Lake and Delmoe Lake, just east of Butte. Brandy’s car was found parked alongside the road. Snow covered the back and front windshields. More snow had piled up on the car’s rear bumper, obscuring the car’s license plate. The car was parked unremarkably in a designated pull-out area, and police said there was no sign of foul play at the vehicle. There were no tire tracks from the vehicle in the snow around the car, indicating to police that Brandy’s Tercel had likely been parked there for at least a few days.

That's a lot of snow when National Weather Service records from the local reporting station at the airport in Butte show no precipitation during the time between when Brandy Christiansen was last seen and when her car was found.

Brandy has not been found.

Anyone with information about the 2007 disappearance of Brandy Christiansen from the Butte, Montana area is asked to call police at 406-497-1120, or the Butte Crimestoppers at 406-782-7336.

Dossier 2 - Jayme Closs

A case, a double murder, a mystery ripped from the national headlines.

In our second dossier episode, we’ll examine a brutal double murder, and an apparent abduction which occurred mere months ago in a small town in Wisconsin.

This is our second dossier episode: the murders of Denise and James Closs, and the apparent abduction of their teenage daughter Jayme.

In this Dossier, we discuss the abstract theories as well as the more popular theories among the public.  We bring you the facts as we know to be true and even share our thoughts on the case.  We plan on bringing you more information as it becomes available.

Stay tuned to our Patreon page for an update that we found after recording this episode.  It is pretty interesting information and completely changed at least Heather’s, if not Scoot’s opinion too, about the events that occurred within the home on that fateful night.

If you or someone you know has any information that may aid the police in the search for Jayme, please reach out to the Barron County Sheriff’s Department via the following tip line at 855-744-3879 or email jaymetips@co.barron.wi.us.

Chapter 4: Episode 3 (Elizabeth Andes)

Please listen to episode 3 for more information on the persons of interest in the case as well as some observations we made along the way.  There are some eerie similarities between Beth’s case and a previous unsolved case that we've covered here on Status Pending.  Additionally, we will discuss investigative processes/procedures, what makes a case turn cold, false confessions, and lost evidence.  You will also hear from Steven David Lampley in this episode as we discuss lost evidence.  He is the only police officer in history to persuade a serial killer (Cleophus Prince Jr., aka "The Clairemont Killer") to voluntarily walk into a police department!

Chapter 4: Episode 1 (Elizabeth Andes)

Elizabeth Andes was found murdered in her Ohio apartment on December 28, 1978; just a week after her college graduation.  She was described as outspoken, feisty, and fireball by her friends.  Her boyfriend, a stand-out college football player, was immediately arrested for the brutal crime.  Just 15 hours later, Bob Young signed a confession and was charged.  This case gained national notoriety recently after being featured on the "Accused" podcast and remains unsolved to this day.  After all of these years, questions surrounding the 23-year-old's murder linger.  Why is this case still open?  Who killed Beth?  What happened to all of the evidence if the case hasn't been solved?

This case is one that needs attention.  There isn't much available on the case, other than the research Amber Hunt and her team conducted.  Please listen to episode 1 prior to episodes 2 and 3 in order to fully understand why this case is so difficult to solve almost 40 years later.  In episode 2; you'll hear from Amber Hunt, herself, about her investigative work on the case.

Episode 1 of Chapter 4 provides the facts and timeline surrounding the case.
