Dossier 2 - Jayme Closs

A case, a double murder, a mystery ripped from the national headlines.

In our second dossier episode, we’ll examine a brutal double murder, and an apparent abduction which occurred mere months ago in a small town in Wisconsin.

This is our second dossier episode: the murders of Denise and James Closs, and the apparent abduction of their teenage daughter Jayme.

In this Dossier, we discuss the abstract theories as well as the more popular theories among the public.  We bring you the facts as we know to be true and even share our thoughts on the case.  We plan on bringing you more information as it becomes available.

Stay tuned to our Patreon page for an update that we found after recording this episode.  It is pretty interesting information and completely changed at least Heather’s, if not Scoot’s opinion too, about the events that occurred within the home on that fateful night.

If you or someone you know has any information that may aid the police in the search for Jayme, please reach out to the Barron County Sheriff’s Department via the following tip line at 855-744-3879 or email jaymetips@co.barron.wi.us.

Chapter 4: Episode 3 (Elizabeth Andes)

Please listen to episode 3 for more information on the persons of interest in the case as well as some observations we made along the way.  There are some eerie similarities between Beth’s case and a previous unsolved case that we've covered here on Status Pending.  Additionally, we will discuss investigative processes/procedures, what makes a case turn cold, false confessions, and lost evidence.  You will also hear from Steven David Lampley in this episode as we discuss lost evidence.  He is the only police officer in history to persuade a serial killer (Cleophus Prince Jr., aka "The Clairemont Killer") to voluntarily walk into a police department!

Chapter 4: Episode 1 (Elizabeth Andes)

Elizabeth Andes was found murdered in her Ohio apartment on December 28, 1978; just a week after her college graduation.  She was described as outspoken, feisty, and fireball by her friends.  Her boyfriend, a stand-out college football player, was immediately arrested for the brutal crime.  Just 15 hours later, Bob Young signed a confession and was charged.  This case gained national notoriety recently after being featured on the "Accused" podcast and remains unsolved to this day.  After all of these years, questions surrounding the 23-year-old's murder linger.  Why is this case still open?  Who killed Beth?  What happened to all of the evidence if the case hasn't been solved?

This case is one that needs attention.  There isn't much available on the case, other than the research Amber Hunt and her team conducted.  Please listen to episode 1 prior to episodes 2 and 3 in order to fully understand why this case is so difficult to solve almost 40 years later.  In episode 2; you'll hear from Amber Hunt, herself, about her investigative work on the case.

Episode 1 of Chapter 4 provides the facts and timeline surrounding the case.

Dossier 1 - David Josiah Lawson

He was supposed to be a force for good in the system. A criminal justice major who went to one party off campus.
It was the last thing he ever did.

This is one case among many. But some who listen to this month’s episode will say it’s many cases explained by one.

So far, our cases have stopped at the borders of American law enforcement; the failures of agencies, the era and date in time of the case, and sometimes just plain bad luck. This month, unavoidably, features an added dimension; one that will inevitably expand our conversation beyond the case at hand.

But this remains true: a young man’s life was taken, and it needn’t have been.
And nobody is today in jail for the crime.

When we begin our investigation of a case each month, we don’t really (honestly) have any idea how it’s going to go! So far in this series, we’ve brought you first person investigators and people directly related to the case in some way. In this case, though it may or may not surprise you once you learn about more, we weren’t able to talk to anyone with direct knowledge of the events or the investigation in the amount of time we have to examine the case.

Sometimes, that’s going to happen. So, we had a choice: we could keep working the case, in the hopes that we landed our sources in a few weeks, or even more… which would delay the chapter’s release; we could bag the whole chapter and start over; or we could release sort of a partial chapter. And that is what this is… we’re calling this month’s single download our first Dossier episode.

Chapter 3: Episode 3 (Alissa Turney)

Episode 3 of Chapter 3 is formatted a bit differently than previous chapters in the sense that we have a guest in this episode as well. Moxie was an incredible asset to us and for this chapter as she researched and provided us with a tremendous amount of information about the likelihood and statistics surrounding missing person cases.  Scott and Heather added Moxie’s information into episode 3 since this is how the entire case began; Alissa was a missing person.  So, we go through the timeline a bit more in depth and discuss questions as well as potential justifications that Michael had for his actions/behaviors. This was a really tough case for us as since we have our minds made up about what happened.  However, as you will see, we examine the case from different perspectives in an effort to provide the listeners with every possible scenario.  As you will hear though, by the end of this chapter, we’re in the same boat as Sarah. Please refer back to episodes 1 and 2 prior to listening to this one in order to understand the timeline, evidence, and efforts being made by Sarah for Alissa.

Episode 3 of Chapter 3 provides statistics surrounding missing person cases as well as the questions/theories/thoughts that have come up throughout this case.

Chapter 3: Episode 2 (Alissa Turney)

Episode 2 of Chapter 3 provides interviews from two experts on the case.  We hear from Alissa’s sister, Sarah and Ottavia (who produced the Missing Alissa podcast) on the case.  We delve deeper into the timeline from Sarah’s perspective as well as Michael’s mental state.  We learn what it was like for Sarah growing up in a home with Michael and what he made them (Sarah & Alissa) believe was “normal”.  We learn about the surveillance methods and phone tapping that Michael used within the home.  Additionally, we learn about Michael’s behaviors before and after Alissa’s disappearance.  Furthermore, we hear about how the family and detectives feel about the case as well as how they feel/what they think about Michael Turney.  Finally, this episode provides detailed information about the ways in which YOU can help with this investigation.  Please refer to episode 1 prior to listening to episode 2 in order to understand the timeline and efforts by Sarah and Ottavia.

Special thanks to Sarah Turney for taking the time to speak with us about something so sensitive.

Chapter 3: Episode 1 (Alissa Turney)

Chapter 3 delves into the Alissa Turney case. Alissa Turney was a fee-spirited, precocious 17-year-old who disappeared on May 17, 2001 from Phoenix, Arizona. She left early on the last day of school and was picked up by her stepfather.  According to Alissa’s stepfather, Michael, they first ate lunch together and then had an argument over Alissa wanting more freedom that summer. From all accounts, arguing was pretty common between the two.  What made this argument different though, was the fact that Michael proclaimed that after this particular argument Alissa stormed off angrily to her bedroom.  That was apparently the last time he had seen Alissa.  Listen to Chapter 3: Episode 1 now to hear more about the events that transpired after this argument.  At the end of Episode 1; we believe you will be just as shocked as we were by what you hear. Please refer to episodes 2 and 3 after listening to this episode in order to fully grasp the dynamics of this case as well as the efforts being made by Sarah on Alissa’s behalf.

Episode 1 of Chapter 3 provides the facts and timeline surrounding the case.

Chapter 2: Episode 3 (Beverly Jarosz)

Episode 3 of Chapter 2 provides statistics and interesting information about strangulation, the accuracy as well as the admissibility of the polygraph test, and key points about the handling of the crime scene and investigation in 1964 compared to modern day techniques. Additionally, Scott and Heather discuss the rabbit holes, roadblocks, journalism etiquette and our thoughts about the case.  We have a strong feeling that this case CAN be solved.  We just hope that the investigators obtain the information needed to make the arrest.
